We will attend to the season of long dark nights by learning a variety of Slavic traditional ritual and composed polyphonic songs. Over the course of the three-hour workshop, participants will have the opportunity to learn 3 or 4 songs in a choral context, with support from Ekaterina, Aleksandra, and Alison, learn about the cultural context of each song, consider pronunciation and musical technique and sing together. We welcome beginner through advanced singers. While sheet music will be provided, you can also learn by listening and singing along. No experience with Polish, Ukrainian, Russian or Belarusian languages required. Space is limited, so please consider booking early.

Cost: $30-$50, sliding scale. If you would like to learn with us and are unable to pay some or all of the fee, please inquire about our song workshop stipend (inquiries may be sent to birdbonetheatre@gmail.com). Our sliding scale pricing is made possible by the generosity of those who can contribute a little more to keep community singing afloat. If you choose to contribute more, your donation will go toward offering a stipend for participants who may be unable to pay some or all of the fees. Donations of all amounts are appreciated, and can be sent here.

Ekaterina’s devotion to the music of Balkan, East Slavic, and Near East Cultures can be heard in her ensembles BLISK and Meden Glas. Her love for braiding traditional elements with alternative music are found in her work with folk metal group Protokult and Russian folk-rock band Katüsha. She is based in Toronto. www.ekatmusic.art

Birdbone Theatre makes puppet shows from scratch and plays them live for the young and the old. We strive to make puppet theatre that might become a house for beauty, for remembering old songs and stories, for wild imaginings and for laughter in hard times. www.birdbonetheatre.org

Registered participants will receive recordings and sheet music a week before the workshop (via Google Drive). There will be a teakettle and a selection of herbal teas available to keep our voices warmed up. We will take a short break half way through the workshop. For the collective health of all involved, we ask that you not attend if you feel sick. Should you need to cancel due to illness, please be in touch with us before the start of the workshop so we can issue a refund. Masks are welcome.
